Aliyev believes in Absheron’s potential

According to initial estimates, the reserves of the Absheron gas condensate field in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea are about 300 billion cubic metres of gas, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said at a meeting on the results of the country’s development in the first half of 2023 on 11 July. “A few days ago I was informed about the first gas production from the field. The debit figures are also very good. Even more gas and condensate is produced from one well than from Shahdeniz. Of course, Absheron is inferior to the Shahdeniz gas field in terms of its reserves. According to initial estimates, it is somewhere around 300 billion cubic metres. But I am sure it will be bigger,” Aliyev said. The head of state emphasized that the start of production from the Absheron field will ensure a high level of energy security of Azerbaijan, and the volume of exported gas will increase year by year not only due to the Shah Deniz field, but also due to Absheron. “Work is already underway on the first phase of Absheron. SOCAR should probably soon start more active negotiations with its foreign partners regarding the second phase of development of this field. Again, we anticipated exploration works, but we did not expect such great results, frankly speaking. This was very good news and a very good, honourable answer to some “experts” trying to cast a shadow on Azerbaijan’s energy potential. Therefore, from now on our plans for gas exports will be realised at an accelerated pace and in greater volume,” Aliyev said. It is worth adding that the confirmed total gas reserves in Azerbaijan are about 1.5 trillion cubic metres, whereas the potential is twice as much.
