NATO creates a center for the protection of underwater pipelines and cables

NATO defense ministers approved plans to create a maritime center to ensure the security of critical underwater infrastructure at a meeting in Brussels, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said. The center will be based at the headquarters of the NATO Naval Forces in Northwood near London. The creation of the center is motivated by the fact that about 8 thousand kilometers of oil and gas pipelines pass through the North Sea alone, and it is impossible to constantly monitor other underwater information systems and networks. NATO members will focus on high-risk areas, such as pipelines in shallow water, which can be easily reached by divers. Potential damage to data transmission cables can be easily eliminated by conducting repairs, Al Jazeera TV channel reports.
