Baku: A 22-year-old Azerbaijani citizen has been diagnosed with the first confirmed case of monkeypox in the country. The individual had traveled abroad for tourism from January 2 to January 11, 2025, and shortly after returning, sought medical care in Baku. The patient reported symptoms including fatigue, fever, blister-like rashes in the genital area, swollen lymph nodes, and muscle pain, as detailed in a joint statement by the Ministry of Health and the Management Union of Medical Territorial Units (TABIB), APA reports. According to Azeri-Press News Agency, an infectious disease specialist suspected a monkeypox virus infection based on the patient's symptoms. After reviewing the patient's travel history, it was noted that they had contact with an individual displaying rashes during their trip abroad. This epidemiological link, combined with the symptoms, prompted laboratory testing. A PCR test conducted on a swab from the patient's rash confirmed the presence of the monkeypox virus. The patient is curren tly hospitalized and receiving treatment within hospital conditions. The patient's family members, who have been in contact with them, are not exhibiting any symptoms of illness. They are under home observation by outpatient medical facilities and sanitary-epidemiological service workers. Preventive treatment has been prescribed for them, and they have been provided with necessary medications. The treatment and observation measures for the patient and their contacts will continue until the incubation period of the disease concludes.
