CIS Observer Mission Begins Monitoring Tajikistan’s Parliamentary Elections

Dushanbe: The CIS observer mission has commenced its work in overseeing the parliamentary elections in Tajikistan, focusing on both the preparation and conduct of the elections for deputies to the Majlisi namoyandagon Majlisi Oli of the Republic. According to National Information Agency of Tajikistan, citing the CIS Observer Mission, the mission has embarked on monitoring activities to ensure transparency and fairness in the electoral process. On February 8, Deputy Secretary General of the CIS, Nurlan Seitimov, engaged in discussions with Bakhtiyor Khudoyorzoda, the Chairman of the Central Commission on Elections and Referendums of the Republic of Tajikistan. This meeting marked the official start of the mission, during which they deliberated on the progress of the election campaign and the organization of the mission's activities. Nurlan Seitimov highlighted that this mission represents the 131st engagement of CIS observers in elections and referendums across CIS member states, and it is the ninth such m ission in Tajikistan. He emphasized the mission's extensive experience in joint electoral work, which fosters confidence in constructive cooperation throughout the election campaign. The Deputy Secretary General reiterated that the mission operates on principles of political neutrality and non-interference in both the electoral process and the internal affairs of Tajikistan. The mission's evaluations are grounded in its own observations, official information, and factual data provided by electoral bodies and state authorities. The mission comprises approximately 120 personnel, 10 of whom will conduct long-term observations. Personal meetings with political party leaders, deputy candidates, and official state representatives are considered crucial components of the observation process, Seitimov noted. The Mission Headquarters is tasked with coordinating these efforts, having initiated its work and engaging in necessary activities related to organizing the observation. This includes preparing documents for o bserver accreditation and organizing the collection, processing, and analysis of electoral process materials. In response, Bakhtiyor Khudoyorzoda informed the CIS observers about the preparation measures undertaken by Tajikistan's election authorities. He provided detailed insights into the nomination and registration of deputy candidates, training of election commission members, and efforts to clarify voter lists. The Chairman of the Central Commission on Elections and Referenda assured that the activities of the commission and lower-level election commissions would remain transparent, with commission members open to cooperation with international observers.
