Kempir-Abad case: New charges brought against Ilgiz Shamenov

New charges were brought against civic activist and businessman Ilgiz Shamenov, accused of attempt to organize mass riots in order to seize power. Lawyer Zamir Zhooshev announced.

According to the lawyer, the activist is additionally charged with Article 326 «Forcible seizure of power» of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic. This crime is punished by imprisonment from 10 to 15 years with confiscation of property.

«The criminal case, which is called Kempir-Abad case, seems to be sent to court soon. I would like the court to carefully study the case materials, give them an objective assessment and make a fair decision,» Zamir Zhooshev said and stressed that Ilgiz Shamenov is still treated in the hospital.

Ilgiz Shamenov was detained in Moscow on October 28, 2022, then taken to Bishkek. He was then charged with articles 278 «Preparation to organize mass riots with the use of firearms» and 327 «Public calls for a violent seizure of power» of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic.

The Committee for protection of Kempir-Abad reservoir was created on October 22. It includes activists, politicians and MPs. On the same day, in an interview with Kabar news agency, President Sadyr Japarov said: the authorities have information who was behind the rallies and marches on Kempir-Abad issue.

Mass arrests began on October 23. Authorities placed 27 people in jail on charges of preparing for riots.

On April 12, the court changed the measure of restraint for Klara Sooronkulova, Gulnara Dzhurabaeva, Mambetzhunus Abylov and several other defendants in this criminal case to house arrest.
