UN representatives called all partners today for an effective cooperation in preventing violent extremism and emphasized the central role of the Sustainable Development Goals in addressing root causes of violent extremism worldwide.

The panel discussion UN Support to Preventing Violent Extremes: Field Experiences was led by the United Nations within the framework of the High-level International Conference Countering Terrorism and Preventing Violent Extremism, held at the National Library of Tajikistan.

Co-organized by the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, this side event of the High-level Conference was attended by nearly 160 representatives of high-level government and UN entities, official delegations to the Conference, diplomatic missions, civil society organizations, development partners, think tanks, international and regional organizations, as well as religious leaders.

Dr. Pratibha Mehta, UN Resident Coordinator in Tajikistan, who co-chaired the session, said, Violent extremism undermines peace and security, sustainable development and human rights. There is no single pathway, and no complex algorithm that can unlock the secrets of who turns to violent extremism.

But we know that violent extremism flourishes when people feel voiceless, excluded, abused, marginalized, when their identity is questioned and when too many people especially young people lack prospects and meaning in their lives. The UN promotes inclusive, equitable and sustainable development to address many of the socio-economic drivers of violent extremism, she added.

Panelists and participants of the discussion noted that comprehensive development programmes, which address youth vulnerabilities and empowerment of women, are critically needed to reduce the scale, scope and future risk of violent extremism while building more inclusive economies and governance systems. In this context, the Sustainable Development Agenda provides a framework for progress through the creation of peaceful, just, inclusive, and economically progressive societies.
