Press release of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan following the meeting with the Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany

Distinguished members of the media!

Ladies and gentlemen!

As you know, today the Founder of Peace and National Unity - Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon received the Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany Heiko Maas.

The conversation traditionally took place in an atmosphere of friendship, creativity and mutual understanding.

The sides discussed issues of bilateral, regional and multilateral cooperation.

The talks focused on the current state and prospects of the situation in Afghanistan, which today is complex and unpredictable.

Expressing concern over the difficult situation in Afghanistan, the sides discussed the possible security, economic, social and humanitarian consequences.

It was noted that the establishment of an inclusive government with the participation of representatives of all ethnic groups is one of the factors contributing to the stabilization of the situation in Afghanistan. The Tajik side stressed that it would not recognize any other government that would be formed through violence and coercion.

Given the direct threat posed by Afghanistan's current situation to countries in the region, Tajikistan is particularly interested in strengthening cooperation with Germany on the security situation in Central Asia and Afghanistan.

We expressed our readiness to support Germany's constructive and humanitarian initiatives.

We noted that in order to strengthen the border and eliminate the negative consequences of instability in the neighboring country, natural disasters and COVID-19 Tajikistan needs the support of development partners, including Germany.

The sides expressed concern over the possibility of Afghanistan becoming a base for training international terrorists.

It was also noted that the two countries share a common position in the fight against terrorism, extremism and transnational crime.

For Tajikistan, Germany is one of the most important and reliable partners in Europe, and we are ready to further expand cooperation between Tajikistan and Germany on issues of bilateral, regional and international significance.

In this regard, we stressed the importance and role of existing instruments of bilateral cooperation, including political consultations between Tajikistan and Germany, as well as cooperation in the framework of "Green Central Asia" and the new EU Strategy for Central Asia.

It was decided to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Tajikistan and Germany in 2022 and to hold scientific and cultural events in this regard.

The legal framework plays an important role for effective cooperation between our countries in areas of mutual interest.

Terrorism and extremism remain the primary threats to peace and stability in our regions. Therefore, we are ready to cooperate with Germany to combat and prevent this phenomenon.

Emphasizing the need to strengthen the legal framework, it was stressed that the draft Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany on cooperation in the fight against crime and security is ready for signing.

Thus, we expressed satisfaction with the current level of relations and considered it important to continue and expand further cooperation.

Thank you!
