On Tuesday November 8, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon met in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt with the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-27), according to the Tajik president’s official website.
During the meeting, Rahmon reportedly expressed satisfaction with the current level of cooperation between the parties and declared Tajikistan’s readiness to continue and expand fruitful relations with the United Nations and its institutions.
It was emphasized that this year marks the 30th anniversary of Tajikistan’s membership in the United Nations, and Tajikistan during this period has secured significant achievements on the path of sustainable development and strengthening the foundations of statehood.
The parties reportedly discussed the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, the elimination of modern threats and challenges, ensuring the highest human values, and resolute combat against the dangers and threats of our time. The issue related to the situation in Afghanistan and its impact on the region was also discussed.
They also exchanged views on the global initiatives of Tajikistan in the direction of solving the problems of shortage of drinking water, climate change, melting glaciers and other significant efforts of our country.
It was emphasized that a thousand glaciers have completely melted in Tajikistan over the past few decades. Natural disasters caused damage to the economy of our country in the amount of 250 million dollars, in many cases even caused human losses.
The Tajik president’s official website says the UN Secretary-General noted the leading and key role of Tajikistan and its leader in solving global problems, especially problems related to water and security.
