Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu arrived in Dushanbe, where today, he will hold talks with the Tajik leadership on the modernization of the republic's armed forces and the functioning of the 201st Russian military base, reported Khovar's correspondent.
These issues are planned to be discussed today with the Minister of Defense of Tajikistan Sherali Mirzo.
The Founder of Peace and National Unity, Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon is planned to receive Shoigu.
The talks will be focused on the issues relating to modernizing the army of Tajikistan, as well as to the functioning of the Russian military base stationed in Tajikistan, reported TASS with reference to the Russian Defense Ministry.
The main topics of the talks are the issues of equipping the Russian military base stationed in Tajikistan with new types of weapons, as well as the modernization of the Tajik army, said the Press Secretary of the Russian Defense Ministry Rossiyana Markovskaya.
The 201st base is the largest Russian military facility outside of Russia. It is located in two cities, Dushanbe and Bokhtar. According to the agreement signed in October 2012, the base will remain in Tajikistan until 2042.
Earlier, Vladimir Putin thanked President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon for his contribution and assistance in the work of the Russian military base. The Russian President noted that this is an important factor for stability and security in the region, including in Tajikistan, wrote TASS.
