Second meeting of the High-Level Panel on Water and Climate Issues in Geneva

March 8, 2022 at the World Meteorological Organization in In Geneva, the second meeting of the High-Level Panel on Water and Climate was held under the title "Leaders of Water and Climate", where Tajikistan was represented by Minister of Energy and Water Resources Daler Juma and Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection Bahodur Sheralizoda.

In the light of the fight against climate change, Friday touched upon a number of related issues and noted the new initiative of the President to declare 2025 as the International Year for the Protection of Glaciers and the establishment of a special International Fund for the Protection of Glaciers.

In particular, it was noted that the main purpose of this initiative is to raise awareness about the rapid decline of glaciers in the world and to facilitate the development of measures to address the possible consequences of melting glaciers.

The meeting also discussed other initiatives developed under this Panel, aimed at integrated solutions to water issues and climate change. The meeting concluded its work with a final document entitled "Call to Action" and the parties agreed to develop an Action Plan for its implementation in the near future. It was noted that the first results of the work of "Water and Climate Leaders" should be presented in the framework of the United Nations Conference on the Medium-Term Decade for Water, which will be held in March 2023 in New York under the auspices of Tajikistan and the Netherlands.

A high-level panel on water and climate issues entitled “Water and Climate Leaders” was established in 2021 by the World Meteorological Organization and the UN-Water Mechanism to promote integrated water and climate issues on the World Development Agenda. high-level politicians and experts are its members. The Founder of Peace and National Unity, Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon was one of the first to be invited to join this High-Level Panel, taking into account their valuable contribution to the promotion of water and climate issues in the world agenda.
