The Deputy Minister for Industries, Trade and Investment, Stella Manyanya, says the government has introduced new regulations which will contain the manufacturing or importation of sub-standard agricultural machinery and rural technology into Tanzania.
The new regulations are vital to protect the country against becoming a dumping ground of second-hand and poor quality agricultural machinery and equipment, she says, adding that the Centre for Agricultural Mechanisation and Rural Technology (CAMARTEC) has been directed to implement the regulations.
CAMARTEC should now make use of the new regulations to contain importation of such agricultural machinery into the country, she told a media conference here Wednesday to unveil the regulations.
Manyanya explained that the regulations give CAMARTEC legal authority to test all models of agricultural machinery and rural technologies manufactured in the country or outside the country which are intended for use in agricultural or rural development.
The centre's Director-General, Siza Tumbo, said the new regulations would ensure that machinery or rural technology is in good working condition. The centre may now visit and inspect the manufacturers, dealers or agents to ensure that their products conform to the requirements of the Act and the regulations, said Tumbo.
