Since October 1, gas production has stopped at the largest field in Europe in the Netherlands Groningen. This is reported by the ANP agency. A giant gas field in Groningen in the north of the Netherlands was discovered in 1959, its development began in 1963. The initial recoverable gas reserves of the field amounted to 2.9 trillion cubic meters. For many years, the field has been the main source of gas supply in Northwestern Europe. At its peak, more than 50 bcm of gas were produced here per year. However, due to earthquakes related to production, in 2018 it was decided to gradually reduce the volume and close the field. In June, the Dutch authorities decided to completely stop gas production in Groningen from October 1, 2023. At the same time, it is possible to resume the operation of the field in case of emergency, for example, due to a cold winter
