Taipei, Feb. 2 (CNA) All Chinese nationals, except those from Hong Kong and Macau, will be denied entry into Taiwan beginning Thursday, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced Wednesday, as the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in China jumped past 20,000.

In addition, all Taiwanese passengers who have traveled recently to China, Hong Kong or Macau, will be subject to a mandatory 14 day home quarantine, the center said.

Taiwanese who receive advance approval to enter Taiwan from Hong Kong and Macau will also be required to conduct self health management for 14 days, the center said.

Meanwhile, beginning Friday, Hong Kong and Macau citizens will be put under home quarantine for 14 days after landing in Taiwan, the center said.

Other foreign nationals who have visited China, Hong Kong or Macau in the last 14 days will be prohibited entry to Taiwan starting on Friday, it added.

To date, the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019 nCoV), which originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan, has claimed 493 lives in China and one in the Philippines, according to the latest statistics provided by the World Health Organization (WHO).

There have been 24,554 confirmed cases across the globe as of late Wednesday, 24,352 of which have occurred in China, WHO statistics show.
