Central Asian Ambassadors Meet European Union Delegation in Brussels

Last week in Brussels, the European Union delegation headed by the Secretary-General of the European External Action Service Stefano Sannino met with the ambassadors of the Central Asian states.

The meeting focused on the results of visits to the region by the President of the European Council Charles Michel, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission Josep Borrell.

The parties also discussed the results of the regular meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the countries of Central Asia and the EU, the recently held conference in Samarkand on connectivity.

The attention of the parties was also focused on the ways and means of implementing the adopted decisions.

Tajik MFA extends condolences over death of Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan has extended condolences over death of Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei.

 

“With a feeling of deep sadness, we received the news of the untimely death of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus. Vladimir Makei was an outstanding diplomat; he made a tangible contribution to the expansion of the bilateral cooperation between Belarus and Tajikistan. We express our sincere condolences to family and friends of Vladimir Makei due to bereavement,” says a statement released by the Tajik MFA.

 

The Belarusian Foreign Minister wrote on Facebook on Saturday that Vladimir Makei “died suddenly today.” It also posted a picture of Makei on Twitter, writing in English that he “has passed away.”

 

Belarusian media reports say the 64-year-old Vladimir Makei died of a heart attack.

 

“Vladimir Makei was at home in Drozdy when he had a heart attack,” Nasha Niva writes.

 

Makei attended a conference of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in Yerevan earlier last week and was due to meet Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on Monday.

 

Western media reports say that before the presidential elections and mass anti-government protests in Belarus in 2020, Makei had been one of the initiators of efforts to improve Belarus’ relations with the West. However, he changed his stance after the start of the protests, saying they were inspired by agents of the West.

 

Makei had served as Foreign Minister of Belarus since 2021. Previously, he had served as an assistant and later as chief of staff to Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. Makei was married and had three children.

FM Muhriddin Receives U.S. Ambassador Due to the Completion of His Mission in Tajikistan

Today, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Sirojiddin Muhriddin received the U.S. Ambassador to Tajikistan John Mark Pommersheim on the occasion of the completion of his diplomatic mission.

The meeting focused on the state and prospects of bilateral and multilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and the U.S. in the political, economic, scientific, cultural fields, as well as in the fields of health and education.

Muhriddin thanked Pommersheim for his contribution to strengthening friendly relations between the two states.

High-ranking Tajik economic delegation visits Germany to discuss cooperation, participate in business forum

A high-ranking Tajik delegation visited led by the Frist Deputy Prime Minister Davlatali Said paid a working visit to the Federal Republic of Germany last week (November 21-15).

 

The Tajik MFA information department says the delegation visited the cities of Berlin, Hamburg and Lübeck to hold intergovernmental negotiations and participate in Tajikistan – Germany business forum.

 

The delegation members reportedly included heads of relevant ministries and agencies, senior representatives of state-run and commercial banks, the private sector, as well as domestic entrepreneurs.

 

During the visit to Berlin, the First Deputy Prime Minister of Tajikistan held bilateral meetings with the leadership of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Federal Ministry of Economy and Climate Protection (BMWK), the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL), the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the German Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (BMAS).

 

To discuss the current state and prospects of further expansion of cooperation, Davlatali Said reportedly met with the Executive Director of the Eastern Committee of the German Economy, Michael Harms.

 

The roundtable to discuss the topic of mineral resources in Tajikistan was held in Berlin. Speaking at the meeting, Tajik Minister of Industry and New Technologies Sherali Kabir reportedly drew the attention of the audience to the rich natural mineral and non-mineral resources of the country. He invited German investors to cooperate with Tajikistan to effectively use these opportunities.

 

Besides, presided over by the Chairman of the National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT) Hokim Kholiqzoda, a roundtable was held at the Association of German Banks to discuss the issue of establishing interbank cooperation.

 

Following the meeting, NBT head and senior representatives of Tajik commercial banks met with representatives of prestigious German banks, according to the Tajik MFA information department.

 

On the evening of November 21, an official reception in honor of the visit of the official delegation of Tajikistan with the participation of prestigious German companies was held by the Eastern Committee of the German Economy.

 

On November 22, the Tajikistan – Germany business forum was held in the port city of Hamburg with the participation of more than 65 influential German and European companies and 40 representatives of the domestic private sector. This event was reportedly held at the initiative of the Embassy of Tajikistan in Berlin jointly with the Eastern Committee of the German Economy. A wide range of Tajik and German businessmen and officials from various structures of the two countries participated in the forum.

 

The Chairman of the State Committee on Investment and State Property Management of Tajikistan Sadi Qodirzoda presented the economic and commercial, hydropower, logistics, investment, and tourism opportunities of the country. Entrepreneurs were provided with the necessary information about the investment climate in Tajikistan, projects, business support measures, as well as the benefits offered by the Government of the country.

 

As a result of the business forum, the Tajik side reportedly signed agreements and memorandums worth more than 600 million euros with German and European companies on cooperation in the fields of industry, processing of minerals and the introduction of modern technologies to create new manufacturing enterprises.

 

Following the official part of the conference, the forum participants held bilateral meetings in the B2B format, where they exchanged views on key issues, including the state of trade and economic potential and prospects for the development and implementation of direct cooperation.

 

To expand cooperation in the fields of trade and economy, as well as to attract more German capital to the fields of the national economy the parties agreed to hold the next Tajikistan-Germany Forum in the first half of 2023.

 

A high-ranking delegation of Tajikistan was reportedly received by the leadership of the Senate of Hamburg. During the conversation, the sides expressed interest in strengthening further economic and trade cooperation between Tajikistan and the Federal Land of Hamburg.

 

In honor of the visit of a high-ranking economic delegation of the country to this region, the First Deputy Prime Minister of Tajikistan Davlatali Said and the Ambassador of Tajikistan to Germany Imomudin Sattorov were received by the President of the city of Lübeck Klaus Pushaddel and its mayor Jan Lindenau.

 

During the trip, the delegation visited the largest production facilities of “Baader Group” (world-wide manufacturer of innovative machinery for the food processing industry) and “Dräger” (an international leader in the fields of medical and safety technology), located in city of Lübeck, federal province of Schleswig-Holstein, according to the Tajik MFA information department.

Illicit trade in pyrotechnic substances

During the operational-search activities, police officers on suspicion of committing this crime detained two 20 and 21-year-old residents of Dushanbe.

During the inspection, 28 thousand, 200 units of pyrotechnics of the «Mickey Mouse» under the title were found and seized from the detainees.
An investigation is underway on this fact.

National State Holidays of Tajikistan Celebrated in Brussels and Cairo

Yesterday, in honor of the 30th anniversary of the XVI Session of the Supreme Council of Tajikistan, the President Day and the State Flag Day, a grandiose festive meeting was held in Brussels with the active participation of compatriots living in the Benelux states.

The historical significance of the Session of the Supreme Council and the constructive role of the President Emomali Rahmon, in the development of new Tajikistan were mentioned by numerous examples.

The main attention of the audience was drawn to the need for his full contribution to the implementation of plans for revival as an important national task both within the country and in its external relations with the international community.

A colorful moment of the event became classical instrumental music performed by a young composer, a student of the Royal Conservatory of Belgium Jannat Huseinzoda.

Also, yesterday, in Cairo, a solemn meeting was held dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the XVI Session of the Supreme Council, the State Flag Day and the President Day with the participation of the compatriots living in Egypt.

Ambassador of Tajikistan Zarobiddin Kosimi, speaking about the history of the young state of Tajikistan, the outstanding role of the XVI Session of the Supreme Council and the efforts of the President Emomali Rahmon, on the path to achieve peace and save the Motherland from collapse, as well as the achievements on the way to strengthen the foundations of our state, called on those present to adequately appreciate all these achievements and contribute to strengthening the prestige of the state and nation on the world stage. During the meeting, a historical documentary film was also shown to those present.

UN Special Rapporteur Mary Lawlor will assess the situation of human rights defenders in Tajikistan during an official visit to the country from today, 28 November to 9 December 2022. The visit will provide an opportunity to discuss the situation of human rights defenders and key concerns and challenges faced by civil society in the country. Lawlor said she would focus on Tajikistan’s implementation of the Declaration on Human Rights Defenders and other relevant international human rights instruments, to ensure a favourable and enabling environment for human rights defenders to carry out their legitimate and peaceful activities to promote and protect human rights. ‘I will also examine existing and planned measures to protect human rights defenders, including legislation and policies; the overall environment for registering and administering non-governmental organisations; freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and the accessibility of legal aid,” Lawlor said. During her visit, the expert will meet representatives of Government agencies, as well as UN officials, representatives of regional human rights mechanisms, members of civil society organisations and human rights defenders, lawyers, journalists and other relevant stakeholders. The Special Rapporteur will hold a press conference to share her preliminary observations with the media. It will take place at 1500 local time on Friday, 9 December 2022, at the UN Headquarters in Dushanbe, 5/1 Lohuti Street. Access will be strictly limited to journalists. The Special Rapporteur’s findings and recommendations will be presented to the UN Human Rights Council in March 2024. ENDS Ms Mary Lawlor (Ireland) is the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders. She is currently an Adjunct Professor of Business and Human Rights in Trinity College Dublin. She was the founder of Front Line Defenders – the International Foundation for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders. As Executive Director from 2001-2016, she represented Front Line Defenders and had a key role in its development. Ms. Lawlor was previously Director of the Irish Office of Amnesty International from 1988 to 2000, after becoming a member of the Board of Directors 1975 and being elected its President from 1983 to 1987. The Special Rapporteurs are part of what is known as the Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council. DUSHANBE – The Government of Tajikistan, the milling industry and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) held a national roundtable on the implementation of the national food fortification law and the next steps to further expand wheat flour fortification in the country.

Food fortification is one of the most cost-effective means of combating micronutrient deficiencies, which remain a major public health problem in Tajikistan, particularly for women and children. The roundtable was conducted by WFP and attended by representatives from the government, wheat flour mills and development partners. It is part of a series of ongoing discussions around food fortification issues, particularly wheat flour fortification in the country.

“WFP is committed to continuing to work with Government ministries, departments and the private sector to further expand fortification. As a global leader in fortification, we have a body of experiences and knowledge to offer to contribute to better health and nutrition of Tajik children and their families,” said WFP Country Director in Tajikistan Adham Musallam.

In 2022, WFP conducted a comprehensive analysis of the Government and the private sector capacities and public demand for fortification. WFP facilitated visits to mills in Sughd Region and in October, WFP also organized a study tour to Uzbekistan for fortification partners to learn about the country’s regulatory framework and implementation of wheat flour fortification.

The United Nations World Food Programme is the world’s largest humanitarian organization, saving lives in emergencies and using food assistance to build a pathway to peace, stability and prosperity for people recovering from conflict, disasters and the impact of climate change.

The Foreign Minister received the European Union Special Representative for Afghanistan

On 28 November 2022, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan Mr. Sirojiddin Muhriddin received the European Union Special Representative for Afghanistan Mr. Tomas Niklasson.

A fruitful discussion was held on the issues related to the security situation in Afghanistan, as well as the cooperation of the parties in the direction of resistance against international terrorism and extremism.

The parties also exchanged views on bilateral relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and the European Union in the political, economic, humanitarian spheres and the expansion of regional cooperation.
