China stands ready to work with Central Asian nations to build community with shared future, says Xi

Presided over President Xi, the virtual China-Central Asia summit took place on January 25.

Xinhua reports that as China's first major diplomatic activity involving Central Asia this year, the summit was attended by leaders of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Hailing the development of China-Central Asia relations over the past three decades as "a good example of fostering a new type of international relations," Xi reportedly pointed out that the keys to the successful cooperation are mutual respect, good-neighborly friendship, solidarity in trying times and mutual benefit.

"China stands ready to work with Central Asian countries to build on the good momentum and strive shoulder-by-shoulder to build an even closer China-Central Asia community with a shared future," Xi said in his speech, also making some proposals to realize the objective.

He announced that China will continue to provide vaccines and anti-epidemic supplies to Central Asian countries, and will step up joint production and technology transfer with respect to COVID-19 vaccines and medicines.

In 2022, China will provide an additional 50 million doses of vaccines as aid to Central Asian countries, and set up traditional medicine centers in countries where they are needed, Xi added.

In his speech, Xi suggested that the two sides should speed up high-quality cooperation, and strengthen cooperation on artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing and other high-tech sectors.

The Central Asian leaders reportedly said they will work with China "together for a shared future," echoing the motto for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, and said they eagerly look forward to attending the opening ceremony of the sporting event next week.

The leaders of the five Central Asian countries spoke highly of the fruitful results of cooperation with China, praising the development of relations between Central Asian countries and China that has not only promoted their respective development and prosperity, but also effectively safeguarded regional peace and stability, according to Xinhua.

Both sides said they viewed the summit as a significant milestone.

Citing the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, Xinhua says trade between China and Central Asian nations has grown by more than 100 times in the past 30 years, and the stocks of China's direct investment in the five countries exceeded 14 billion U.S. dollars.

According to a joint statement released after the summit, China and the Central Asian countries agreed to strengthen the docking of the Belt and Road Initiative with the five nations' own development strategies.

4 people were killed in a traffic accident

Eighteen new officially confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported in Tajikistan on Tuesday

The number of the officially confirmed coronavirus-linked deaths in Tajikistan has remained the same – 124.

A MoHSPP says a total number of those who have been cured in Tajikistan since April 30, 2020 has reached 16,995.

The COVID-19 pandemic in Tajikistan is part of the worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The virus was confirmed to have spread to Tajikistan when its index cases, in Dushanbe and Khujand, were confirmed on 30 April 2020.

By January 13, 2021, government reported that all cases had either recovered or died, leaving the country free of COVID-19 for the first time since April 2020. Rahmon highly appraises the results of a 30-year development of relations with China

He reportedly noted creation of a favorable legal foundation, establishment of a permanent political dialogue in a spirit of trust, high rates of trade, economic and investment cooperation, including implementation of large-scale infrastructure development projects.

Emomali Rahmon reportedly emphasized that Tajikistan is interested in continuing a constructive political dialogue between with China at the highest level and further developing strategic partnership at both the bilateral and the multilateral level.

In this regard, Rahmon outlined sectors like industry, green energy, transportation, agriculture and digital economics as areas, which could drive the bilateral trade between the two countries.

Speaking at the summit, Tajik leader reportedly called on the summit participants to expand cooperation in these areas within the framework of the “Central Asia-China” mechanism and take additional measures to increase trade turnover as well as create a favorable environment for active investment.

An active cooperation between the parties in the field of climate change and its impact on the region’s economy was reportedly recognized as important.

The importance of concerted cooperation in the field of healthcare, especially in view of pandemic was emphasized, according to the Tajik president’s official website.

It is to be noted that Tajikistan and China have friendly relations characterized by bilateral and multilateral collaboration. The two countries established formal relations on January 4, 1992, shortly after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

China is now among the four largest trade partners of Tajikistan. Over the first eleven months of this year, the total trade turnover between Tajikistan and China has reached 709 million U.S. dollars. A number of large Chinese enterprises in various industries operate in Tajikistan.

Tajikistan and China are active members of the regional and international organizations and closely cooperate within the framework of these organizations, particularly the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Through the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), China swayed Tajikistan to combat the ‘three evils’ that are terrorism, separatism, and religious extremism.

The legal foundation of the bilateral cooperation between the two countries includes more than 200 interstate and intergovernmental agreements.

The governments of China and Tajikistan collaborate on security and military training; this collaboration has become stronger since the 2001 United States invasion of Afghanistan. The two countries' militaries have conducted joint military exercises since 2006.

USAID Funds Tajikistan’s Road Transport Digitization System

Digitalization of the road transport industry was discussed on January 24 in Dushanbe at a meeting of the leadership of the Ministry of Transportation with the representatives of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

By president’s decree Sulaimon Ziyozoda, who previously served as Minister of Agriculture, has been appointed Deputy Prime Minister, replacing Davlatsho Gulmahmadzoda, who was appointed Tajikistan’s Ambassador to Russia in late August last year.

An official source within the Tajik president’s press service has confirmed this information. He further noted that staff changes had been introduced to other government bodies as well.

According to him, president’s decrees on new appointments will be posted on the president’s official website today evening.

Meanwhile, a source at the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) says Sa’adi Karimzoda, formerly First Deputy Minister of Agriculture, has been appointed Minister of Agriculture, replacing Sulaimon Ziyozoda.

Sulaimon Ziyozoda, 60, had served as Minister of Agriculture since November 2020. Before this, he served as chairman of Divashtich district in Sughd province no more than a year. Prior to this, Ziyozoda had served as deputy governor of Sughd province.

On January 26, 2022 the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan Sirodjidin Muhriddin received the Head of the OSCE Program Office in Dushanbe Valery Kiver on the completion of his work in Tajikistan.

During the meeting the sides also discussed issues of development of relations between Tajikistan and the OSCE in the framework of three dimensions of cooperation - military-political, economic-environmental and human.
