Female artisans from Tajikistan participate in Creativeworld consumer goods fair in Frankfurt

Small and medium women-run artisan businesses-owners from Tajikistan participated in the Creativeworld consumer goods fair that took place in the German city of in Frankfurt from February 4 to February 7.

Designers, female artisans, representatives of art academies from more than 160 countries of the world reportedly participated in this fair.

This year, ten talented female artisans from Central Asia participated in the Creativeworld consumer goods fair putting on display their exclusive handcrafted works.

Their participation in the exhibition was supported by USAID’s Trade Central Asia and the Commercial Law Development Program (CLDP), which is a division of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Limited Liability Company Dehai Gulzar and Munir Brand represented Tajikistan at the Creativeworld consumer goods fair in Frankfurt.

As part of the exhibition, CLDP partnered with USAID’s Trade Central Asia activity and the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage reportedly conduct a workshop on marketing strategies and trade fair best practices for a group of 10 small and medium women-run artisan businesses-owners from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

Creativeworld is the world's largest trade fair for hobby, crafts and artists’ requisites, which unites the most important DIY (do it yourself) industry manufacturers from all over the world.

Avalanches caused by heavy snow leave 16 dead in Tajikistan

Avalanches caused by heavy snow have killed at least 16 people in Tajikistan.

As it was reported earlier, an avalanche that came down in Nosir-Khusrav neighborhood unit of Khorog, the capital of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), Wednesday morning destroyed four houses and partially damaged 35 others, killing thirteen people. Twelve other people reportedly sustained various injuries.

Most of the dead are residents of GBAO’s Murgab district who were renting a house in Khorog. Among the victims are also residents of Khorog itself, Tsorsh village of Roshtqala district and Derzoud village of Rushan district.

Among those injured by the avalanche are also residents of Murgab district, Khorog as well as Roshtqala and Ishkashim districts.

The Emergencies Committee under the Government of Tajikistan has said the rescue phase came to an end in Khorog on February 16, while the search operation is under way.

Meanwhile, the evening news of the GBAO Regional TV Station in Russian reported Wednesday at 6:00 pm that three avalanches came down in Khorog Wednesday morning.

An avalanche that came down in Khorog’s Tem neighborhood unit reportedly destroyed the gas station and canteen at it. Fortunately no casualties were reported.

The Emergencies Committee also reported that avalanches killed two other people in GBAO’s Vanj district.

27 avalanches reportedly occurred in the GBAO during the period from February 13 to February 15. To-date, 11 households in Vanj district, 335 households in Rushan district, 17 households in the city of Khorog, 10 households in Shugnan district, and 39 households in Roshtqala district have been evacuated from avalanche-prone areas to safe places

According to the Emergencies Committee, one more person was killed by an avalanche in Varzob district on a highway linking Dushanbe with the northern city of Khujand, the capital of Sughd province.

An avalanche came down Wednesday morning on the 65th kilometer of the Dushanbe-Khujand highway, trapping four cars. The passengers and drivers were saved. Unfortunately, one of the drivers died.

Mountains cover 93 percent of Tajikistan’s territory, and avalanches and mudslides kill dozens of people every year.

The Emergencies Committee warns that warmer temperatures have increased the risk of further avalanches in the country and advises people not to travel to mountain areas unnecessarily

AKDN responding to avalanches that have hit Tajikistan-Afghanistan border region

Following heavy snowfall over the last few days, over 50 avalanches have hit the Badakhshan regions of Tajikistan and Afghanistan, says press release issued by the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) on February 15.

Multiple casualties have been reported so far and around 20 buildings and houses have been damaged or buried in the provincial capital Khorog as well as surrounding villages.

Building on its long-standing collaboration in disaster response, the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH) mobilized quickly to respond to the urgent request from the Government of Tajikistan, deploying trained teams to conduct search and rescue operations.

With heavy snowfall continuing, AKAH is helping relocate people from at risk areas and providing temporary shelter for those displaced.

AKDN is also providing fuel to district authorities to support local ambulance services and is clearing roads blocked by the avalanches.

AKDN’s Pamir Energy is working to repair damage to power lines and resume energy services in affected towns as soon as possible.

The number of crimes related to trafficking in persons for prostitution increasing in Tajikistan

In a report released at a news conference in Dushanbe, the chief of the Interior Ministry Organized Crime Control Directorate Shodi Hafizzoda revealed on February 15 that 86 human trafficking related crimes were registered in Tajikistan last year.

According to him, the number of crimes related to trafficking in persons for prostitution has increased in the country.

“Twenty-four crimes related to trafficking in women for prostitution were registered in Tajikistan last year, which is 14 cases more compared to the previous year of 2021,”

Besides, nine child-selling cases were registered in the country last year, Hafizzoda noted.

“Criminal proceedings over 53 cases of illegal organization of labor migration, primarily to Russia, were instituted last year, which is 23 cases more than in the previous year,” the Organized Crime Control Directorate chief added.

DUSHANBE WATER PROCESS. Promotion of Water Issues at the Global Level Discussed In Jakarta

The promotion of water issues at the global level was discussed on February 15 in Jakarta during the meeting of Indonesian President Joko Widodo with members of the World Water Council and the Special Envoy of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan to the Water and Climate Coalition Leaders.

At the meeting, Joko Widodo emphasized six topics for the 10th World Water Forum, to be held in Bali in 2024. One of these was water for humans and nature.

Special Envoy of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan to the Water and Climate Coalition Leaders Sulton Rakhimzoda, informed the President of Indonesia about the preparations for The UN 2023 Water Conference under the chairmanship of Tajikistan and the Netherlands.

He noted the active participation of Indonesia in the preparatory process of the Conference and invited Joko Widodo to attend this historic meeting in New York. The president of the World Water Council, Loic Fauchon informed the President of Indonesia about the preparations for the forum in Bali.

Tajik Mining Enterprises Increase Production Volumes by 65.5 Million Somoni

In 2022, Tajik mining enterprises and enterprises for the production of precious metals increased production volumes. This was reported today at a press conference at the Ministry of Industry and New Technologies.

Representative of Tajikistan Attends the Central Asian Agriculture Ministers

The Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Tajikistan attended the sixth meeting of the Agriculture ministers of Central Asian countries.

The sixth meeting was hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture of Uzbekistan and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

During the meeting, Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Tajikistan Kurbon Hakimzoda expressed his opinion on the production and export opportunities of agricultural products in Tajikistan.

The participants of the meeting also exchanged information on proven modern approaches to the distribution of public funds to achieve the maximum effect in stimulating agricultural growth. These include investment in infrastructure (roads, irrigation systems), promotion of agricultural research and education, and better management of natural resources. In addition, changes in tax schemes, direct and indirect subsidies, tariffs and import quotas may also affect the development of the agricultural sector.

Death Toll from Avalanches in Khorug Reaches 13 People

The death toll from avalanches in Khorug reached 13 people, as well as the number of injured – 12 people, reports the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense.

Also 4 residential buildings completely and 35 partially damaged. Five household objects were caused by damage.

On February 15, at approximately 9:50 am local time, as a result of heavy snowfall, a large avalanche descended on the residential buildings of the Nosir Khusrav settlement in Khorug.

The Regional Commission for Emergency Situations determines the damage.

On that day, at about 12:80, a 30-year-old resident of the Sadvad village of the Vanj district fell under an avalanche and died. His body was recovered by the locals.

At 5:10 pm, two residents of the Khaspo village of the Vanj district, who arrived for the funeral rite of the deceased resident of the Sadvad village, also fell under the avalanche, one was rescued, the search for the other continues.

According to the Committee, from February 13 through February 15, 27 cases of avalanches were registered in Tajikistan.

In order to evacuate the population from dangerous areas to safe places, 11 farms were evacuated in Vanj district, 335 farms in Rushon district, 10 farms in Shugnon district, 39 farms in Roshtkala district and 17 farms in Khorug.

Also on February 15, at about 12:00, avalanches descended on the 65th km of the Dushanbe-Varzob highway, killing a 47-year-old driver. His body was removed by the rescuers of the Committee.

According to forecasters, the danger of avalanches will remain until February 19.

Earlier, the Committee has already reported that due to warming in recent days and precipitation, the danger of avalanches remains in the western regions of GBAO, in the mountains of the Hissor Range, as well as on the Dushanbe-Khorug, Dushanbe-Khujand, Dushanbe-Lakhsh, Khorug — Murghob, and Khorug – Ishkoshim highways.

10 Killed In Avalanches In Tajikistan

Ten people were killed in avalanches in Tajikistan yesterday, according to the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defence.

Eight people died and 22 residential houses were destroyed, after heavy snow hit Khorog, the capital city of Tajikistan’s eastern Gorno-Badakhshan Region. The avalanche also caused blackouts in the region.

Another two were killed in an avalanche near Dushanbe, the nation’s capital, which also left many cars buried on a highway.

Local meteorological department has warned that the avalanche threat will last until Feb 19.

Tajikistan, with mountainous regions accounting for 93 percent of its territories, is prone to natural disasters like avalanches and mountain torrents.
