AKF and JICA contribute to International Economic Forum “Kulob-2022”

The Aga-Khan Foundation in Tajikistan (AKF) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have actively contributed to the work of International Economic Forum “Kulob - 2022” held on August 26-27. The purpose of the forum was to present investment opportunities, intensify the process of attracting capital, strengthen the production of import-substituting products, expand cooperation between entrepreneurs and investors, create joint ventures and establish mutually beneficial cooperation in Khatlon region.

The forum took place in Kulob city in the premises of State University named after Abu Abdulla Rudaki with the participation of more than 300 people including officials from Government of Tajikistan, ministries and state committees, distinguished guests from foreign embassies and development partners as well as investors from other countries.

The event started with an exhibition of goods and products of domestic manufacturers in the field of industry, agriculture, tourism, and banking services. AKF presented agriculture produces such as reproduced high-quality wheat seeds, potato, pomegranate, and apples produced by farmers through “Agribusiness Development” and THRIVE projects funded by JICA and USAID and implemented by Mountain Societies Development Support Programme (MSDSP).

During the official part of the forum the representatives of the government of Tajikistan, development partners and business sector made speeches. In his speech, the head of Khatlon region Mr. Hakimzoda Kurbon informed participants about the investment climate and opportunities of the Khatlon region and stressed out the importance of the role of business sector as well as development partners in socio-economic development of the region. On the latter, he mentioned in particular about valuable contribution of JICA, USAID and AKF in job creation, entrepreneurship and agrobusiness development in Khatlon region.

Mr. Takasaka Muneo, Chief Representative of JICA Tajikistan office expressed his gratitude to the Government of Tajikistan for organizing such an important event that improves business environment and contributes to creating business network between Tajik and foreign enterprises in the region with huge economic potential. While briefly introducing JICA activities in the region Takasaka Muneo stated, “We have been implementing several projects in Khatlon region, which are contributing to the private sector development, creation of enterprises for processing and packaging of food products, improvement of farmer’s access to quality agriculture inputs such as seeds and fertilizers, as well as extension system of agricultural advisory services.” He added “In agriculture sector, together with our implementing partners AKF and FAO, we have contributed to the improvement of wheat and potato seed revolving funds by providing 129 tons of elite wheat seeds and 100 tons of elite potato seeds to farmers in Khatlon, GBAO and Sughd regions.”

The official part of event ended with signing of several cooperation documents for the amount of 3,5 billion Tajik somoni.

In the working part of the forum, plenary sessions dedicated to various sectors including agriculture, industry and tourism were conducted. This section contained speeches and presentations of the responsible authorities of the industry, entrepreneurs and investors, representatives of development partners and experts. AKF was represented in two plenary sessions. Mr. Behruz Dadoboev, manager of “Agrobusiness Development” project presented the outcomes of the project as well as opportunities for collaboration with established Agriculture Input Revolving Funds. Mr. Pulod Amirbekov, Coalition of Employers Senior Coordinator, presented AKF initiative “Coalition of opportunities for business and youth” and emphasized the mission, opportunities for youth and business development.

JICA began its technical cooperation with Tajikistan in 1993 by inviting Tajik officials to gain knowledge and experience on governance and macroeconomics development. As of March 2020, a total number of participants to JICA’s Knowledge Co-Creation Programs, formerly called the Training Programs, has exceeded 2380 people. Turkish Airlines CEO in Tajikistan completes his mission in Tajikistan

He told what it was like to work in our country.

Abdulkerim Torun headed the branch of one of the most successful airlines in the world in our country for seven years and shared his impressions of working in Tajikistan before leaving.

Torun joined Turkish Airlines in 2004 and managed the company's branch in difficult conditions in Iraq (Suleimaniye city) for 5 years. Then in March 2016 he was appointed director of the Turkish Airlines Branch in Tajikistan.

Since 2016, Turkish Airlines has been flying three times a week on the Istanbul-Dushanbe-Istanbul route with A320 aircraft.

«The pandemic period was the most difficult for our company, the branch suspended flights for 6 months due to the closure of airspace from the Republic of Tajikistan, but despite the difficulties, the company supported its employees all this time», - Torun says.

According to him, thanks to the efforts of his team, as well as favorable cooperation with state institutions of the Republic of Tajikistan, today flights are carried out by wide-body aircraft of the A330 type.

«We would like to propose to consider the possibility of increasing the number of flights and contribute to the provision of our high quality services to the people of Tajikistan. The increase in the number of flights will also serve to further strengthen the friendship of our peoples», - notes the CEO of Turkish Airlines.

During the period of work in Tajikistan, Abdulkerim Torun acquired many close friends and acquaintances and thanked everyone who supported him in carrying out his activities, all government institutions, organizations and agencies with which the company cooperated.

He hopes that the airline, which serves as a bridge between the two countries, will further promote the culture and trade of Turkey and Tajikistan by increasing flights in the near future.

They will take place in Moscow on September 5 during the visit of the head of the Tajik Foreign Ministry, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing on Wednesday, TASS writes.

Kazakhstan lifted restrictions on the export of wheat and flour. What does this mean for Tajikistan?

Tajikistan imports about 98% of wheat and flour from Kazakhstan.

The Interdepartmental Commission on Foreign Trade Policy of Kazakhstan lifted restrictions on the export of wheat and flour, the official information resource of the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan reports..

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, a good grain harvest is expected in Kazakhstan.

This year it is planned to harvest more than 13 million tons of wheat, which exceeds last year's harvest by 12%. bout 6.5 million tons are required for domestic consumption.

The Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan was instructed to monitor the export of grain and work out the issue of further regulation of the export of grain and flour.

Recall that restrictions on the export of grain and flour in Kazakhstan were introduced from April 15 this year.

Dushanbe-Chanak highway switches to autumn mode

Free Economic Zones of Tajikistan Produce Over 200,000,000 Somoni Worth of Products This Year

This year, free economic zones (FEZs) of Tajikistan have produced 243,000,000 somoni (almost $24 million) worth of products, reports the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade.

From January through July of this year, they were produced in two FEZs, including Sughd and Dangara. All funds were received from the activities of the subjects of these FEZs.

There are 11 entities operating in Dangara FEZ. During this period, products worth more than 34.4 million somoni ($3.3 million) were produced.

Thirteen enterprises produced the most products for in these months in the amount of 208.5 million somoni ($20.5 million) in Sughd FEZ.

In other subjects of free economic zones, such as Ishkoshim, Panj and Kulob, no products were produced.

Emomali Rahmon and Vladimir Putin will open five Russian-language schools in Tajikistan

Via video conferencing on Knowledge Day.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, together with the head of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, will open five Russian-language schools in the republic via video conference on September 1. TASS reports

" Via video conference, Putin and Rahmon will take part in the opening ceremony in Tajikistan of five secondary schools with instruction in Russian ", — said in the telegram channel.

Recall that schools were built in five Tajik cities - Dushanbe, Khujand, Kulyab, Bokhtar and Tursunzade to promote the Russian language and culture in Tajikistan.

Emomali Rahmon opened new buildings of TSMU
