OPEC chief: Oil cartel does not focus on oil price

The actions of OPEC and OPEC+ are not aimed at influencing oil prices, but are aimed solely in the interests of the markets and to provide the industry with investments, OPEC statement in response to criticism from the head of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Fatih Birol. "The IEA knows very well that markets are affected by a combination of factors. The consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, monetary policy, stock movements, trading algorithms, commodity options consultants, strategic stock issues (SPR) - agreed and not, geopolitics. And these are just some of the factors," the message quotes the words of the Secretary General of the alliance, Haysam al-Gais. He stressed that distorting the actions of OPEC and OPEC+ is counterproductive, and blaming the alliance for the rise in oil prices is incorrect. "If anything leads to volatility in the future, it will be the IEA's repeated calls to stop investing in oil, knowing that all forecasts based on data foresee the need for more of this precious commodity to stimulate global economic growth and prosperity in the coming decades, especially in developing countries," Al-Gais said.
