Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry accuses Armenia of deliberate military escalation

After the escalation in the area of the Zod mine on May 11, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry accused Armenia of stepping up military provocations against Azerbaijan in the country's border regions.

The Foreign Ministry's comment says that the Armenian armed forces opened heavy fire on positions of the Azerbaijani army in the evening of May 10, resulting in a seriously wounded Azerbaijani soldier.

"Despite warnings to stop provocation and deliberate military escalation, from the morning of 11 May the Armenian armed forces further escalated the situation by firing mortars at positions of the Azerbaijani armed forces, resulting in the death of one soldier.

The fact that Armenia's provocations, as always, take place amid the backdrop of intensified negotiations on a peace treaty, or the expected negotiations of the leaders, shows Armenia's disinterest in the peace process," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry statement said.

"Such actions by Armenia, which are detrimental to the negotiation process, should be strongly rejected and condemned by the international community. The Azerbaijani armed forces are taking all necessary measures to prevent provocations by Armenia. All responsibility for the deliberate aggravation of the situation lies with the military-political leadership of Armenia," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
